This coffee steak is perfect for Valentine’s

Coffee infused steakLove is in the air, you could say that there is a whole latte of it if you are a fan of coffee related puns. With it being Valentine’s Day tomorrow, couples across the world will be settling down with their significant other to celebrate romance, but for those who are entertaining their partner at home with a meal, what to cook?

Well if you’re companion, or date, is a connoisseur of coffee and a fan of a steaks, then this evening meal will ensure that Cupid’s arrow finds the mark.

Rather than end your romantic sit-down meal with a sophisticated shot of coffee, why not use it as inspiration, utilise the flavour and integrate it throughout the entire menu?

Predictably, this recipe serves two and to get the most out of it we would advocate starting the preparation tonight in order to get the most out of the concoction of flavours

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of ground coffee (Use any variety, but we suggest sourcing either a tried and trusted favourite, or a special purchase of something new.)
  • ½ teaspoon of chilli power
  • 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon of salt, or to taste.
  • 2 Steaks – Your choice on the size and cut!

Method

  1. Using a spice grinder or a traditional mortar and pestle, grind down the chilli, pumpkin seeds and the coffee until it is a fine powder.
  2. Transfer the mixture into a small bowl, add the oil and salt and stir.
  3. Rub the spices (and coffee) over and into the steak.
  4. Set on a plate, cover, refrigerate and allow the steak and spices to settle for for at least two hours, or overnight for a fuller flavour.
  5. When ready to cook, heat a skillet to a medium-high temperature and add the steak.
  6. Cook.
  7. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.
